Outside of the usual preinstalled apps like TikTok and Spotify, the handiest app is Lenovo Vantage Vantage has multiple settings to customize the laptop, including different performance modes depending on if you want silence or full-blown power. The Legion 7 Gen 7 produced middling scores with its AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX CPU, not really competing with the Legion 7i Gen 7 but matching up with the Gigabyte Aero 16 and easily surpassing the underperforming Razer. It did, however, generally outperform the Corsair’s HS-class chip. The 3DMark Time Spy results hint that the Legion 7 Gen 7 is off to a strong start. In F1 2021, it came close to the Legion 7i Gen 7 and substantially bested it in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. (Strangely, both Legion models refused to run Rainbow Six Siege; the benchmark test, not the game proper.) It’s no doubt a strong performer.
However, the Alienware now uses Intel’s Core i7-12700H and the Asus deploys the i9-12900H, and both score beyond 9500 points in that multi-core benchmark. The 5800H is not slow, but an Intel Alder Lake laptop or a newer Ryzen chip would all be better choices for content creation and tougher workloads.
The Lenovo Legion 7 delivers strong performance, but gets toasty.
The laptop's camera quality is very poor. My face was blurry, pixelated, and a lot of details on my tattoos and beard were missing. I had trouble accurately capturing bright colors from my LG CX’s rainbow-colored screen saver, which could be seen behind me. The Legion’s keyboard is robust and crisp, with a fast typing action and a numberpad – it’s well built for gaming workloads. The Alienware has a slightly sharper typing action, but there’s little to choose between the two. You’ll only get something that feels significantly weightier if you buy a notebook with low-profile mechanical hardware or if you opt for the Asus and its 2mm of travel. At first, I was surprised by how loud the speakers were. When I began listening to “Omar’s Coming” by Westside Gunn, I noticed how muffled the song was. Then, upon further inspection, I lifted the laptop and realized there were two smaller speakers underneath. Once I lifted it off the surface, Immediately heard the extra “oomph” they provided. I used a Phillips head screwdriver to take out ten screws from the bottom cover of the laptop: four screws along the top, four screws at the bottom, and two screws on either side. The AMD-powered Lenovo Legion 7 is a top-notch gaming laptop for enthusiasts who want next-generation gaming in a mobile form factor. The RGB-powered laptop screams gaming in every way through its well-thought-out design, from the surrounding lights and keycaps to its well-placed vents and speakers. On Shadow of the Tomb Raider (highest settings, 1080p), the Legion 7 hit 97 frames per second during the benchmark at native resolution. This beats out the Alienware x17 and the Razer Blade 15 ’s 77 and 80 fps . However, the MSI GE76 Raider outperformed the Legion 7 at 106 fps. At its native 2560 x 1600, the Legion benchmarked at 71 fps, more than Razer Blade 15’s 54 fps at 1440p.Portability isn’t a strong suit, but this mobile gaming PC is otherwise hard to fault. The Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 7 earns a well-deserved Editors' Choice award among high-end, 16-inch gaming laptops as the Gen 6 model did before it. We’ve boosted our rating by half a star for now including a fingerprint reader, USB 4 ports, and a sharper 1080p webcam. Rise of the Tomb Raider, set to its most demanding settings with ray tracing enabled, scored 99fps at native resolution, while the lowest score I got from Wolfenstein: Youngblood was 105fps and that was with ray tracing on, DLSS off and running maximum detail levels at 2,560 x 1,660. Drop the resolution down to FHD and the frame rate jumps to 141fps. If you like to use a bunch of peripherals, this laptop can more than accommodate your needs with its excellent number of ports. On the left side, you‘ll find a USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 2, DisplayPort 1.4) and an audio port for headphones. The touchpad itself feels smooth to the touch, without any friction when scrolling up and down. My initial battery rundown test drained the Legion 7’s 78Wh cell in just 3hrs 25mins, which is absolutely dire. However, I then realised that the integrated AMD Vega GPU was turned off and with it Nvidia’s Optimus graphics switching system. There’s little between the RTX 3080 and the Asus’ RTX 3070 Ti. Lenovo Legion 7’s 3D Mark Time Spy result of 10,436 rubbed shoulders with the RTX 3070 Ti’s score of 10,389. The Legion 7 Gen 7 seamlessly switches to the Radeon graphics on its Ryzen CPU in power-saving scenarios, and it pays off: over nine hours of battery life for a hulking gaming laptop like this is noteworthy. The next-best time from the Gigabyte Aero 16 was 6 hours and 34 minutes. The Legion 7 Gen 7 also impressed with its peak screen brightness of 512.2 nits.
