About this deal

Whether the diakonoi in Philippians 1:1 and 1 Timothy 3:8-12 are “deacons” is debatable, and not that important. Likewise, whether some of diakonoi, such as Phoebe, Tychicus or Epaphras, were “deacons” is debatable and not important. The fact remains that they are agents with a sacred commission. They were Christian ministers. Beverley Roberts Gaventa notes, “Although washing a corpse is a common custom in antiquity, no mention of it elsewhere makes its way into biblical narrative. The inclusion of this intimate detail here provides one of several indications of Tabitha’s significance to this community of believers.” Gaventa, Acts (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries; Nashville: Abingdon, 2003), 160.

Dorcas ( Greek: Δορκάς, romanized: Dorkás, used as a translated variant of the Aramaic name), or Tabitha ( Imperial Aramaic: טביתא/ܛܒܝܬܐ, romanized: Ṭaḇīṯā, lit.'(female) gazelle'), was an early disciple of Jesus mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles [1] [2] ( Acts 9:36–43, see discussion here). She lived in the port city of Joppa, today absorbed by Tel Aviv. Acts describes her as being known for her "good works and acts of mercy", sewing clothes for the poor. [3] [4] When she died, the widows of her community mourned her and sent urgently for Peter ( Acts 9:38), who was in nearby Lydda. As evidence of her charity, they showed him some of the clothes she had sewn, and according to the biblical account he raised her from the dead. [5] Depictions of Dorcas in art can be found as early as the fourth century, and her raising is often included in Medieval and Renaissance illustrations of the life of Saint Peter. [20] [21] Tabitha (some of her co-workers simply called her “Tab”) had the same witch powers as her mother which caused her the same problems her mother had encountered too. The first pilot (directed by Bewitched producer/director William Asher) did not sell the series. A second pilot starring Lisa Hartman was produced that interested ABC who bought the series. [5] In the second version, Hartman replaced Liberty Williams as Tabitha Stephens, the daughter of Samantha and Darrin. Tabitha is now a twenty something witch working as a production assistant at KXLA (which should not be confused with the real KXLA) television station in Los Angeles. Working with her is her now older and mortal brother Adam (David Ankrum) who admonishes her use of witchcraft. Her previously unmentioned Aunt Minerva ( Karen Morrow) pops in frequently to encourage her to use her witchcraft. Robert Urich is Tabitha's boss and romantic interest.Luke keeps the pace slow and stretches out the narrative by giving Peter four more actions. Peter gives Tabitha his hand, he helps her up, he calls the saints (i.e. the Christians), including the widows, and he shows Tabitha alive. However, after listing Tabitha’s and Peter’s actions, Luke tells us nothing about the reactions of the Christians in Joppa when they saw their beloved Tabitha alive. This is left to the reader’s imagination. Now in Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which being translated [into Greek] is “Dorcas.” She was full of good works [i.e. benefactions] and of almsgivings [i.e. acts of charity to the poor] which she was [continually] doing. Acts 9:36 Washing the body of the deceased was normal Jewish practice, though there is no mention here of anointing. It is not surprising that there are widows waiting around, since they would both have been beneficiaries of Tabitha’s generosity and the ones who had washed the body, since this was the work of women. Peter shows none of the reluctance to come that he later shows in the request from Cornelius, since this person is already a member of the Christian community and is a Jewess. The request for Peter seems to assume the possibility of some miraculous restoration.

Paul has been a love interest to Tabitha for a while, but his arrogance turns her off. Eager to play match-maker, Aunt Minerva devises a spell to turn him nicer. Too nice that is. Paul now acts as a pushover in both his personal and professional life, including donating his possessions to charity. A concerned Tabitha tries to determine what is wrong with him. Metz, Walter (2007), "An Industrial History of Bewitched", Bewitched, Wayne State University Press, ISBN 978-0814335802 Tabitha dismissively refers to Marcus as a "first gen." [6] Lily Bowen mentions serving under her command in one of the Master's squads. [15] Nancy Kravitz, niece of Abner and Gladys Kravitz, arrives in California and seeks the help of her childhood friend Tabitha in making it on her own. Her childlike naivety consistently places her in dangerous situations. She finally finds her calling as a parking enforcement officer. [15]
