About this deal

Mauritius Dodo Rum is a unique and captivating blend of history, culture, and craftsmanship from the island of Mauritius. This rum not only showcases the island’s rich heritage but also pays homage to one of its most iconic yet extinct inhabitants: the dodo. Mauritian rum is crafted using both molasses and fresh sugarcane juice, resulting in a variety of styles and flavours. The island’s distilleries skillfully harness the natural sweetness of the sugarcane, creating rums that are rich, flavourful, and distinctly Mauritian. That said it is by no means an uncomplicated sip. Just because it goes down, perhaps a little too easily does not mean it isn’t complex.

This unaged rum is pot distilled from sugar cane molasses in Scotland by Dumfries-based Ninefold Distillery. J. Gow Rum takes its name from the infamous Orcadian pirate John Gow and the new rum, ‘Revenge’ is named after the ship that the pirate renamed after leading a mutiny on board, due to poor work conditions. Natural sweetness and warm spice on the nose, Banditti Club opens up to toasted pineapple and orange on the palate with notes of clove and anise that lead to a long spicy finish. The team say it is "deliciously smooth and creamy. Notes of vanilla, caramel, butterscotch and citrus, with a long and spicy finish." Both varieties of Mauritius Dodo Rum are not just drinks; they are a celebration of Mauritian culture and history. They embody the spirit of the island, combining the art of rum-making with a tribute to one of its most famous, albeit extinct, inhabitants. The dodo-shaped bottles are not only a novelty but also a symbol of Mauritian ingenuity and a nod to the island's rich past. Whether as a collector's item or a delightful sip, Mauritius Dodo Rum is a perfect representation of the island's flair for combining its history with its present. For those unfamiliar with Moscatel wine, it is produced from grapes of the same name and is a Sherry Wine. As a result its sweet and very raisin heavy. I’m not a wine expert so I’d suggest doing some further research if you want to know more. For the purpose of a rum review I think we know enough now. Ideal for those that enjoy a sweeter style of rum, Matugga Golden Rum (42% ABV) and Matugga Spiced Rum (42% ABV) are currently available via Craft56. J. Gow Revenge rum

I gasped as I stood beside the infinity pool, looking out across the private beach to the sweeping bay beyond. Colourful pirogues – long canoes – bobbed on the turquoise water and candyfloss clouds scudded across an azure blue sky. My first snapshot convinced me that Mark Twain was right when he wrote: “Mauritius was made first and then heaven; heaven being copied after Mauritius.” The LIVE virtual tastings are carried out in the last week of the month. Please keep an eye on our socials for confirmed dates! It’s an interesting nose and a quite complex one. It’s rich, warm and inviting but not overly sweet. It will certainly appeal to those who enjoy un-sweetened rum but what something with some level of sweetness, without being cloying or sugary. Natural sweetness maybe? Mauritius is home to several renowned distilleries, each contributing to the island’s rum legacy in their own unique way. Distillerie de Chamarel, located in the lush hills of southwestern Mauritius, is celebrated for its premium rhum agricole. The distillery takes pride in its field-to-bottle approach, overseeing every step of the production process to ensure the highest quality.

Presentation wise we get the usual S.B.S presentation with the rounded stubby bottle and the “cut out” presentation box. The presentation is modern and focuses on facts around the contents of the bottle. The rum is non-chill filtered and no colouring or additives have been used in its production. In recent years, Mauritian rums have gained international acclaim, earning awards and recognition at prestigious spirits competitions. This global recognition is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of Mauritian rum, solidifying the island’s reputation as a world-class rum producer. I’ve reviewed a few Mauritian rums in the past more I think from Oxenham Distillery than Grays. I’m sure WordPress will work its magic and add a few relevant links to the bottom of this post. Obviously its a column distilled spirit so it won’t have some of the rougher edges of a Pot Still distillate but even still it’s certainly an easy sipper.
