I found the process of development, and standardisation, of sign language extremely interesting, as well as the links between signing and etymology. Many thanks to Sarah Smith, John Murray Press, and Netgalley for arc in exchange for my honest review. She was arrested for apparently having thrown her child into the River Clyde and that there is someone who saw her.Once they had reached their destination, the clerk relinquished his charge to the keeper of the Castle Street Tolbooth, Thomas Sibbald, and scurried back to his duties. As Robert and Jean manage construct a simple way of communicating he starts to gains her trust, Jean starts to confides in her interpreter, imparting the truth.

In between these meetings we have Robert’s trips to Glasgow which take a large chunk of the book while achieving little. Lots of interesting information about sign language and how deaf people were perceived and the story was good too. Jean only has two choices if a court finds her guilty, neither of which are desirable; death by hanging or imprisonment in an insane asylum. The story itself is based on the true story of Jean Campbell who was accused of murdering her own child, the original story involved a child of five (I believe) where in the novel the child is an infant. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.Just as there are now, there were prejudices and assumptions made about the Deaf community at the time, and we get some insight into how sign language evolved when it becomes the key by which Kinniburgh begins to earn Jean’s trust and unlock her story. This production uses a fusion of sign language, image and performance to tell the story of Jean Campbell, a Deaf woman in Glasgow, who in 1817 was accused of murder when her young child fell from her shoulders and drowned in the Clyde.

From being a struggling single mother on a microbudget, she has built a career helping those who society has left behind. A young, deaf woman is witnessed throwing a child into the River Clyde from the Old Bridge in 1817 Glasgow.There are persecuted Irish Catholic laborers, including Jean’s paramour Jim Donnelly whose love for Jean isn’t enough for him to support her and her unborn child. This is a fascinating and thought-provoking read but most importantly a compelling and satisfying read.
