About this deal

Much like traditional whisky producing nations Scotland, Ireland and America it has built a history that includes celebrated producers, big businesses, cheap imitators and distillery closures, and it has expanded to produce a wide range of styles. Togouchi Blended Japanese whisky is know as the “naturalized Japanese Whisky” because they import already distilled single malt whisky from Scotland and grain whisky from Canada. They then go through an undisclosed process to “naturalize” the whisky so that it can be called Japanese Whisky. Then they make their blends. Japanese whisky tends to be a bit more expensive than whisky from elsewhere in the world, so finding a bottle on a budget isn’t easy. Nikka Days is a good choice if you want to try out a Japanese whisky without breaking the bank, with its bright and cheerful character typical of the country’s output.

If you want to get your hands on an archetypical Japanese blended whisky then Suntory’s Hibiki is well worth investigating. It contains whisky from three of Suntory’s distilleries – malt from Yamazaki and Hakushu, and grain whisky from Chita. The Togouchi brand includes four expressions that are new to the UK: Togouchi Beer Cask (40% ABV), Togouchi Sake Cask (40% ABV), Togouchi Pure Malt (40% ABV) and Togouchi Single Malt (43% ABV).

Since a decade, japanese whisky is booming with the rise of its two most famous brands: Suntory and Nikka, but also Ichiro's Malt and many others. The know-how build up over centuries by the japanese including the production of shochu alcohol distillation, pushed some traditional fine spirits producers to engage in parallel in the distillation of malted barley or grain and therefore in the production of whisky occasionally to Hombo Shuzo / March for example, or continuously for White Oak and its famous single malt Akashi. For a truly Japanese tasting whisky, look for a spirit that has been aged in Japanese Oak, known as Mizunara, that produces a taste often compared to coconut. It’s hard to work with, but Japan’s whisky makers have perfected the craft and it is now used by several distilleries. Meanwhile, Akashi Blended Sherry Cask (50% ABV) will be available in the UK for the first time through ABUK.Tina Connolly, senior brand manager at ABUK, said: “We are proud to be marketing and selling these two iconic Japanese whisky brands. Akashi and Togouchi are artisanal brands that each offer interesting and exciting whisky expressions. The Togouchi is a blend grading 43 % ABV, made from imported malt and grain whisky, aged in a tunnel then blended with all the know- how of the master blenders of Chugoku Jozo and diluted with spring water drawn from the heart of the mountains of the Sandankyo Natural Park. It's available in a peated 12 year old and a no peated 18 year old versions, and will be soon released in a no aged premium version. Finally, Togouchi is a naturalized japanese blend with the specificity of being aged in a tunnel, which earned him to be among the most unusual whiskies from Japan.

If you are a fan of japanese whisky you may have already heard of the mysterious Togouchi, a blend from Japan available in 12 and 18 year old, and there isn't much more information about it. But why is it a naturalized whisky? The expression join three existing whiskies available in the UK: Togouchi Premium (40% ABV), Togouchi 9 Year Old (40% ABV) and Togouchi 15 Year Old (43.8%). Grain, vanilla, spirit, honey, apple, and a bit of spice. It’s flat and uninteresting, but at least it’s not completely offensive.
